Pelvic floor physiotherapy is not only for pregnancy. It helps leaking, pressure, tailbone pain, and core recovery for patients across northeast Calgary.

Physiotherapist explaining pelvic floor care to a patient in a Calgary clinic

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is one of the most searched physiotherapy topics in Calgary, and one of the least discussed in day-to-day conversation. People wait through leaking on the trampoline, a heaviness that feels like a tampon is falling out, or tailbone pain that makes sitting at work miserable. None of that is "just what happens after kids."

At Taradale Physiotherapy Massage and Wellness Centre we offer pelvic health care in a private, respectful setting. Patients come from Taradale, Martindale, Saddle Ridge, and across northeast Calgary for leaking, pressure, pregnancy-related pain, and postnatal return to activity.

Who pelvic floor physiotherapy helps

This is not only a postnatal service. We see people during pregnancy, years after delivery, after prostate surgery, and with chronic low back or hip pain that has not settled with standard rehab. The pelvic floor is part of the core canister. When it is not doing its job, other tissues pick up the slack.

  • Leaking urine with coughing, sneezing, running, or jumping
  • A feeling of heaviness, bulging, or pressure in the pelvis
  • Pain with intercourse or tampon use
  • Tailbone, pubic, or sit-bone pain
  • Diastasis (abdominal wall separation) and a core that still feels disconnected
  • Constipation or difficulty fully emptying the bladder

Why "just do Kegels" is incomplete advice

Some pelvic floors are underactive and need strength. Others are already gripping and need length, breathing, and down-training first. Doing endless Kegels on a tight floor can increase pain. Assessment tells us which situation you are in before we prescribe exercise.

A pelvic floor that cannot relax is as much of a problem as one that cannot lift. Treatment has to match the muscle, not a generic app program.

What to expect at your first pelvic health visit

We start with a detailed history: pregnancies, deliveries, surgeries, lifting habits, and what you want to get back to. An internal exam is often useful and is always optional. You can stop or change the exam at any time. If you prefer an external-only assessment, we still have a lot we can do with movement, breathing, and education.

Wear comfortable clothing. You do not need to arrive with a full bladder unless we ask you to. Questions are welcome. Many first-time patients say the most helpful part is finally having language for symptoms they have been quietly managing.

How pelvic health fits with other care in Taradale

Pelvic symptoms often travel with back pain, hip tightness, and poor lifting mechanics. Your plan may include physiotherapy for the spine and hips, massage for surrounding muscle tension, and a gradual return to walking, gym work, or sport. Pregnancy and postnatal patients can also be seen for pelvic girdle pain and rib or neck strain from feeding positions.

Most extended health plans in Alberta cover physiotherapy, including pelvic floor physiotherapy, under the same benefit. Check whether your insurer needs a doctor's note. Our clinic is at 6520 Falconridge Blvd NE, with free parking.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral for pelvic floor physiotherapy in Calgary?

Most private patients do not. Some insurance plans or specialist pathways ask for a note. Bring any paperwork you have and we will help you sort what is required.

Is an internal exam required?

No. It can add useful information, but it is never mandatory. We explain the option, wait for consent, and can treat effectively with external assessment if that is your preference.

Can pelvic floor physiotherapy help after a C-section?

Yes. Scar mobility, abdominal wall recovery, and pelvic floor coordination all matter after caesarean birth, even if you did not have a vaginal delivery.

How soon after birth can I book?

Many people book from six weeks onward, but you can contact us earlier if you have leaking, heavy pressure, or pain. We will tell you what is appropriate for your stage.
